:: The trouble with common sense ::
Not all senses are common. People have different ways and methods of doing certain things, of running certain events.
In chapter 9 of the book of joshua, we learn 3 very important lessons.
1). The lack of wisdom of God in israel
Joshua 9:4-5,12-13 The Gibeonites came with tangible evidence that the people of israel were fooled.
Only with divine insight will w ebe able to decipher what is right and wrong. With human vision, it is impossible to detect any false intentions.
We live in a world where nothing is real anymore. What you see may not be what you get. For example, "You see a very beautiful girl" Think again.. she may not be a girl.
To differentiate between faith and flattery, to resist people's bootlicking and apple polishing. we must have compassion accompanied with wisdom.
The israelites were not sloppy but neither were they alert.
The israelites did think but they did not pray.
They did not ask God.
Know how to discern what is right from wrong.
Remember, when we fail to seek God, we fail.
We not only need the power of God to overwhelm our obvious enemies but also the wisdom of God to detect subtle enemies. Sadly, the church today is obessed with God's power and neglect His wisdom.
Power without wisdom is folly.
2). The concern over the honour of God.
When joshua and the elders learnt that the gibeonites had deceived them, they could not kill them for they had already made an oath. They were concerned over the glory and honour of God.
To break our oath would dishonour God. If we break our oath which we made in the name of the Lord, it goes to show that God cannot be trusted. Therefore, never establish a covenant with God if you have no intention of fulfilling it.
We must therefore, be faithful to God in our mistakes.
3). The hope under the people of God.
Joshua 9:22-27
The gibeonites lived under a curse although their lives were spared.
BUT, because they lived under the people of God's people, some of God's blessings rubbed off onto them.
God brings light out of darkness. He brings grace out of curses. God is a merciful God.
Today, there are many people living under our blessings.. Yet they deserve so much more... We can pour out God's blessings...
The trouble with common sense? knowledge is nothing without wisdom.
